Independent Developers Shine Out at NAMM 2008

This week we’re dedicating space to those intrepid souls willing to risk a lot of money with recording, programming and licensing fees, to bring out a new library. Having beta tested two major orchestral libraries, co-produced a second, and beta tested other software programs, I can tell you by experience that just getting the product to market is a daunting experience. Then, there are the issues of setting up the business that will market this next wave of products.

All in all, it’s an overwhelming task.

The programs you’ll find here are largely done in either the new GVI player from Tascam or the newer Kontakt 2 Player. Products are presented in alphabetical order by the producer’s last name. Each press release is written by the developer and contains important info, some fluff (that’s normal) and links to their website for MP3s. Only a few had genuine product shots, so to even the playing field, I’m only giving their text. You can check out each site independently.

Art Vista™ introduces MALMSJÖ GVI – enhanced Malmsjö Grand in GVI stand-alone player.

January 17, 2008 – NAMM, Anaheim, California – Art Vista Productions, today announced MALMSJÖ GVI – a new enhanced version of its sampled Malmsjö Grand Piano, heard on numerous film scores and television productions around the world. The new MALMSJÖ GVI has been given a substantial face-lift, and an increase in dynamic range, by the use of the new DEF technology offered by Tascam in its Giga software.
“The result of this combination of modeling and sampling is quite stunning,” said Jim Van Buskirk, Giga technology innovator. “This piano, via DEF, breaks the ‘stair-step dynamics’ paradigm that has plagued all sampled instruments before it. Just like the acoustic instrument, MALMSJÖ GVI has continuous dynamics and ever-changing spectral depth.”

To prepare the Malmsjö samples for this new technology, Art Vista optimized the recorded samples from the lowest level. The result is an instrument with pristine audio representation from the very intimate, to “larger-than-life” presentations. MALMSJÖ GVI has also been enhanced with eight-level release sample ambience from a medium-size hall with wood floors, and custom impulse responses by Larry Seyer, the multiple Grammy Award-winning recording engineer. The new MALMSJÖ GVI is backwards compatible with the old sample library Malmsjö Acoustic Grand, and includes the presets from the previous offering. The new GVI format offers increased versatility, as it can be used either as a stand-alone application, or as a VSTi plug-in. It can also be loaded as a sample library into the GigaStudio software.

“The MALMSJÖ GVI finally brings me back to the real Malmsjö Grand, and all emotions connected with playing it,” says Hans Adamson, the artist behind the Malmsjö sample. “There is no other piano with the same lyrical qualities and intimacy as the Malmsjö. It is the ultimate composer’s piano.”

Art Vista™ releases Virtual Grand Piano Version 2.0
New version includes new multi-function interface with new features.

January 18, 2008 — NAMM, Anaheim, California — Art Vista Productions, today announced Virtual Grand Piano Version 2.0. Version 2.0 brings Mac-Intel compatibility as well as new features, and a new interface to the piano software. Even the sample pool has been re-edited for this offering.

Virtual Grand Piano Version 2.0 now includes a large number of calibrated keyboard-specific presets, and allows you to choose your controller keyboard from a list. This ensures a 100% accurate keyboard touch and playback response, no matter which keyboard controller is used to play the software. Other new features are: numerous recording/playing styles presets available directly from the main interface, release samples on/off controllable from interface, three-band parametric EQ, exciter, surround sound panning, “musical” sustain pedal noises that interprets and adjusts to playing style, compression in three levels as well as tape saturation, reverb on/off with control of parameters from interface, accurate authentic handling of release sample playback when triggered by sustain pedal release, and programmable user presets. Virtual Grand Piano Version 2.0 also has improved unisons and minor tuning corrections.

Virtual Grand Piano 2.0 offers full backwards compatibility with version 1.0, and all presets from the previous version are available in version 2.0, including a large number of “Recording Styles” presets emulating piano sounds from famous piano recordings of all genres from 1950 until today.

Virtual Grand Piano 2.0 is based on Native Instruments’ Kontakt 2 Player engine, and it is now compatible also with Mac-Intel (UB) computers. All major plug-in formats are supported, and the software can also be used as a stand-alone application.

Wavelore American Zither
The American Zither is a virtual instrument powered by Tascam’s feature-rich GVI engine. It contains approximately 1.5 gigabytes of pristine one-shots captured from an early twentieth-century American-made zither, which were recorded completely dry using hard wooden mallets. This completely dry-recorded VI is complimented by Gigapulse (convolution)-based resonance modeling, for optional sympathetic resonance. Extensive programming using automation assignments and GVI’s iMIDI rules allow the user an unprecedented degree of real-time control over the library’s sound and performance. Six velocities and 12 round-robin samples per note are included.

Wavelore Pedal Steel Guitar
The Wavelore Pedal Steel Guitar is the first commercial soundware product to allow performance of pedal steel lines without the need for multiple MIDI channels. Powered by Tascam’s GVI engine, Wavelore’s forthcoming second product breaks many barriers in virtual instrument design.

The library is based on over four gigabytes of source material, but uses GVI’s most powerful features to reduce size and memory footprint while still allowing a practically limitless vocabulary of sounds, with a level of realism that has never been accomplished in a pedal steel guitar library to date.

REALITONE introduces RealiVox at NAMM.

RealiVox is a solo vocal Virtual Instrument featuring 11 top session singers, each singing 20 different articulations (ooo, ahh, shoo, bop, la, etc.). Articulations are accessible via key-switches and all articulations feature interval legato sampling. Complex phrases and melodies are playable in real time while sounding realistic. Vocal styles include R&B, rock, operatic, light pop, ethereal and jazz.

Running on Kontakt Player 2 (included) for compatibility with all platforms and sequencers, RealiVox will be released in Spring 2008.


The samples contain the reality of fretless stringed instruments. There are fluctuations in pitch and sound, as well as attacks and vibrato. These modules will add realism to many string libraries without taking away anything from their sound. The performers were sampled in their proper place using our binaural sound technique. No panning is needed to place the instruments.

The programming allows for a very satisfying response of the sections. Just by playing dynamically on your keyboard you are able to achieve great expressiveness and realistic instrument responses. The random selection of instrument releases allows for always new sounding marcatos and spiccatos.

The “MASTER” modules can be used on their own or in context with the RELEASES and PLAYER_FADES modules.

We have also included Partial modules with limited key range. These P_ modules will create a full string orchestra with overlapping instrument ranges.

The latest addition to these modules is our VRSound_Strings_Control script.

It features a velocity display that will help you to determine which velocity values are being sent to the modules. It not only controls the articulations and sample mixes but will display which controllers are received and sent. A second display shows what the modwheel is controlling at any time. If it goes blank there is no modwheel control for the particular setting (Pizzicato).

The “auto_reset” will reset the articulation as soon as a note is triggered. For example you want to use a tremolonde note. The next note will be using the “General” articulation. It also controls the Player_Fade setting with same result. There is a delay time built into the auto reset to accommodate chords.

The tuning of the solo violin can now be use “in tune,” “random” and “alternate,” another unique feature of these violins.
