Several colleges in the U.S. have courses in film music, including USC and UCLA Extension in Los Angeles which have extensive programs. In the east, Berklee College of Music has a 4-year Film Scoring program which offers an excellent education in the business, including their composer-in-residence program which features high level industry composers working with students to show them the ins and outs of working in the real world.
USC's program is a 1-year, highly intensive program featuring courses taught by working film and television composers.
UCLA Extension's Film Scoring program features courses taught in the evenings (to allow for employment during the day, etc.) by working pros in the industry and takes about 2 years to complete taking 1-2 courses per semester.
There are several other colleges which offer film scoring courses and workshops.
