How do I implement my marketing plan and find work from it?
A marketing plan (see "Marketing Plan" section of this knowledgebase) correctly implemented can be the key to a successful career in the industry.

Professionals at all levels of the industry, in a wide variety of different jobs within the industry use marketing plans to keep building new relationships and track work opportunities.

The key is to establish a "marketing system" which implements your marketing plan and materials. Here is a sample marketing system for film and television projects - note that the system is project-specific, and in a successful system you'll have projects at all different levels within "the system."

Note: it can be very helpful to track marketing opportunities in your system using prospecting/contact management software such as ACT!, Goldmine, etc.

1. Determine how/when to make "first contact" - do your homework and determine all the players that are attached to the film currently - especially the director and music supervisor, but additionally the music editor and any post production supervisor(s).

2. Determine what marketing materials you'll use for this contact - you may have different versions of intro letters, etc.

3. Determine which type of demo CD to use. This is especially important. Use a specific CD with music choices customized for the music the film is looking for if you can, and use a "general demo" CD in other cases. You may also want to include a "soundtrack album" demo CD with music compiled from a specific film or other project you've done.

4. Determine how and when you'll follow up to marketing inquiries. This section often makes the difference, and is often done 7-10 days after the prospect receives your demo and other marketing materials.

5. Once the prospect has heard your CD and reviewed your materials, determine what their reaction is and whether they feel you're a good prospect for the film.

6. If you are determined to be a good prospect, determine what you need to do to "close the deal" as they say in marketing-speak. You may need to submit more music that's closer to their needs, or even custom-score a demo scene or two. In other cases, price and fees are the issue. Determine what issues exist and handle them.

7. If you are rejected for a job or told you're "not right," try putting the person saying this in the role of an advisor/mentor, and ask why you were rejected and what they would recommend you should do to improve your chances the next time.

8. In any case, build a relationship! You never know when this will pay off in the future.
